Assistant Mechanic

Purpose Statement:
The purpose of this position is to assist in maintaining all district buses and other vehicles in good operating condition to ensure the safe transport of both the students and employees of the district.
Essential Functions:
- Service, inspect, fuel, wash, and clean buses and related equipment as required.
- Perform required operational and safety inspections of buses and related equipment.
- Assist in routine vehicle preventative maintenance and, mechanical repairs on buses and support vehicles; including but not limited to the following services: lube chassis, changing oil, tune-ups, brake adjustment, lighting, battery service, alternator, starter, transmission, differential, tires.
- Assist with maintaining a clean and orderly shop and keeping inventory properly stocked.
- Assist with ongoing knowledge of WA State Patrol vehicle safety inspection requirements and procedures for vehicles and vehicle operation and prepare and present busses and support vehicles for said inspection.
- Assist with keeping proper maintenance records on vehicles.
- Assist with maintaining volume control of all fuels, oil, and other consumables.
- Provide off-hours service as needed to accommodate vehicle emergency breakdowns or accidents.
Minimum Qualifications
- High School diploma or equivalent
- Knowledge of diesel and gasoline engines and mechanical knowledge in servicing and maintaining automobiles and buses.
- Possess or be willing to obtain and maintain a current Class B CDL with passenger and school bus endorsement and air brake restriction removed
Knowledge, Skills and Abilities
- Demonstrated skill in communicating effectively and professionally with all staff and students and as a team member at all times including in stressful situations
- Ability to follow written and verbal instructions accurately
- Ability to perform work independently with minimal supervision
- Knowledge of safety rules and procedures
- Assist in creating a positive image with school employees
- Regular and acceptable attendance is required
Physical Requirements:
Physical requirements as laid out by the DOT Mandatory Conditions of Employment: Per Federal Highway Administration requirements, drug and alcohol screening is a part of the job requirements. Deer Park School District application process for Assistant mechanics requires the applicant to possess a Commercial Driver's License (CDL) as part of their job responsibilities. Satisfactory completion of such tests is a condition of employment.
Additional physical requirements which may include:
- Moderate degree of physical stamina
- Must regularly lift and/or move up to 50 pounds, frequently lift and/or move up to 100 pounds assisted, and occasionally lift and/or move over 100 pounds assisted.
- Frequent and prolonged standing, sitting, walking, bending, and arm lifting
- Exposure to outdoor weather conditions of heat and cold
- May require exposure to chemicals like oil and gas

Salary Range: $25.04 - $29.93 per hour depending on experience.
Contract Year (260days, 8.0 hours per day 8:30 AM – 5:00 PM Monday - Friday):
